Iyengar Yoga "Yoga works on each individual for his or her growth and betterment physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually" - B.K.S. Iyengar The world's most widely practised method of Yoga is that taught by Yogacharya B.K.S Iyengar of Pune, India. He has studied and practised Yoga continuously for more than 75 years. Iyengar's thorough study, understanding and mastery of Yoga are unrivalled in modern times. Having taught in all five continents, he has won world-wide respect and recognition for his achievements and has made yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere. He continues to set the standard for his teachers and students while his textbooks on Yoga have become classics. Pupils learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of asana (posture). Pranayama (breath control) is gradually introduced. Yoga practice both relaxes and energises. Yoga is suitable for all types of people of all levels of fitness. Practising Yoga helps you overcome stresses and strains, aches and pains and promotes a firm foundation of health and well being. The benefits of yoga include vitality, flexibility, strength, improved posture, concentration, self-confidence, and a sense of well being.
Your Teacher Martin began practising Iyengar Yoga in 1990 to mitigate the stresses of his working environment, and to maintain a good level of fitness. He was encouraged to develop his practise and became a qualified Iyengar Yoga teacher in October 1997 when he was awarded the Introductory teaching certificate. In 1999 he continued his studies by attending a 1 month course at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India, followed by a further 1 month course in 2001. Martin is a regular attendee at Conventions and Workshops undertaken by Senior teachers within the UK, and continues his studies with his own Senior level teacher, Richard Agar Ward, who is based in Bath. He passed the Junior Intermediate Level 1 assessment in March 2004, and the Level 2 in March 2007. He is currently working towards Junior Intermediate Level 3. In the past he has served on committees of the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK), and one of its predecessors, the Light on Yoga Association, and is currently a teacher member of the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK) and Glasgow and West of Scotland Iyengar Yoga Institute (GWSIYI).

The Certification Mark logo shown at the top of the page is the figure of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar in Natarajasana in front of the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Memorial Institute in Pune. It is available to all certified Iyengar Yoga teachers who are true to his method and who qualify to use it. It is necessary to have this trade mark to become a teacher member of IYA(UK) and to advertise yourself as an Iyengar Yoga teacher. It is a symbol of quality. Any yoga teacher who does not display this symbol is not a bona fide Iyengar teacher.
